“Technology evolves at a rapid pace and our customers need attention to detail, so why not create ad hoc services for every need?”
These are the words of Ariel Kelman, vice president of global marketing at Amazon Web Services. In glittering Las Vegas, the curtain fell on re:Invent 2018 during which AWS, the giant of Cloud Computing, announced many innovations concerning robotics, artificial intelligence, blockchain and cloud storage. An event that will make the veins in your wrists tremble… to competitors, of course!
The variety of services and features that Amazon makes available on its platform is mind-blowing. “Amazon Web Services has announced so many new services that it will take years to try them all,” joke techies and insiders.
One of the most important services concerns hardware and is AWS Outpost, i.e. the possibility of having a piece of Amazon’s cloud in the company, complete with hardware identical to that used in databases thanks to the collaboration with VMWare.
Then there’s Managed Blockchain , the service that simplifies the creation and management of scalable blockchain networks through the use of the open-source platforms Ethereum and Hyperledger Fabric. “We weren’t ready yet, but this was the time,” AWS CEO Andy Jassy said during the presentation. This allows you to create networks across multiple AWS accounts to support thousands of applications and millions of transactions per day. And also linked to the blockchain is the Quantum Ledger Database, a self-managed, unalterable and cryptographically verifiable database for books.
On the other hand, as far as artificial intelligence is concerned, the tool that many dreamed of has been announced: Amazon Textract. This feature allows you to extract text and data from any scanned document, recognizing columns, tables, and images.
And what about machine learning? The spotlight was on Amazon SageMaker , which enables companies to deploy machine learning models without major barriers to entry, with more than 150 different algorithms ready to use through AWS Marketplace.
Finally, we want to tell you about a gem that has made the rounds of the news around the world: DeepRacer, the autonomous, intelligent car in scale 1 to eighteen that can be purchased on Amazon.com for about 400 dollars with an attached world championship open to developers and more. When asked by Andy Jassy if he thinks AWS will produce more physical objects in the future instead of intangibles, the CEO replied firmly: “I don’t really believe that the cloud is something intangible.” So, let’s get ready for the news.
Well, so far we have taken you (at least in imagination) to Nevada but now it’s time to return to the shadow of Vesuvius and give you some good news.
We want to invite you to the AWS re:Invent.local.Napoli which will be held on February 13th from 18:00 to 20:30 at Città della Scienza during which together with Danilo Poccia, Principal Evangelist Serverless of Amazon Web Services EMEA, we will focus on the latest news presented by AWS in Las Vegas.
We care a lot about it for various reasons. First of all, because it is the first event, after many years, of the
AWS User Group in Naples
. And then because the Neapolitan AWS User Group, (among the first to be founded in Europe, ed.), is the work of our Fabio Cecaro, CEO of VMEngine who has never stopped studying and believing in a better future.
